The short answer: for men with thick hair on the back, chest and shoulders, laser is the only method that reduces the amount of hair over time instead of removing it again every week. About 12 treatments to a series, then occasional maintenance.
Why men come to laser
Most of the men who come to us are not looking for completely smooth skin. They are looking to stop dealing with it — not to ask someone to shave their back, not to check their shoulders in the mirror before the beach, and not to shave the back of the neck every three days. The practical question is which method gets you out of that loop.
Comparing the methods
Shaving
Cheap, immediate and painless — and exactly for that reason it has to be repeated every two or three days. In areas that are hard to reach — back and nape — it is simply not a solution without help. On top of that, thick hair that is shaved tends to grow in and cause irritation.
Waxing
Lasts weeks instead of days, but pulls the hair out from the root — so it comes back at the same thickness. On thick male hair it genuinely hurts, and you have to wait for the hair to grow long enough before each session.
Chemical creams
They dissolve the hair at the surface of the skin. The result is similar to shaving in how long it lasts, and on sensitive skin they can cause irritation. On large areas such as the back they are awkward to use.
Epilators
Mechanical plucking — the same principle as waxing, with the same limitation: the root is pulled out and the hair returns. On a whole back it is also very slow.
Laser
The energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair root and weakens it. It is the only method on this list where the change accumulates from treatment to treatment instead of resetting. At the end of the series there is little hair left and it is finer, and maintenance is occasional instead of weekly.
What laser does not do: it reduces the amount of hair and its thickness permanently, but it does not erase hair forever. That is why we talk about maintenance and not about finishing.
How many treatments it takes
About 12 treatments for a full series. The exact number depends on the area, the hair colour, the contrast against your skin tone and hormonal factors — so it is set at a dermatoscope assessment and not over the phone. We would rather give you a real range than promise a number that will not hold. More on the intervals in the interval guide.
Does it suit every hair type?
What decides it is the contrast between the hair colour and the skin tone, not the colour alone. White hair does not respond — it has no melanin to absorb the energy. For light hair the answer is decided at the assessment. The device’s four wavelengths widen the range of combinations that can be treated, including dark and tanned skin.
What to check before choosing a clinic
- Which device — how many wavelengths, and whether there is continuous cooling
- Who operates it — and whether that same person stays with you through the series
- How it is priced — by area or by time, and what happens if you need less than planned
- What happens at the assessment — whether the skin is scanned before the intensity is set
At OZ Clinic the device is the Advance Titanium SHR 4 ICE, pricing is by treatment time rather than by a list of areas, and the assessment is done with a dermatoscope before we start. Work out the price for your areas · the full price list.
Before and after the treatment
Before: shave — with a trimmer any time from right away up to a few hours before, with a razor about 24 hours in advance so the hair has time to come out — arrive without a fresh tan, and do not touch wax or tweezers. After: 72 hours without heat. The full detail is in the before & after guide.
The downsides — without sugar-coating
These are the things worth knowing before you start, and they are true at any clinic — not only ours.
It is a process, not a single action
About 12 treatments in three stages, with widening gaps — roughly 1.5–2 years from the first treatment to the end of the series. Anyone looking for a solution for next week will find it in a razor, not in laser.
It does not erase hair forever
Laser reduces the amount of hair and its thickness permanently, but after the series occasional maintenance is needed. Anyone promising you a complete end is selling you something that does not exist.
White, grey and vellus hair respond less well
The beam is absorbed by melanin, and a white hair has none. Very light hair responds partially. This is checked with a dermatoscope at the assessment, and we say it in advance instead of selling a series that will not work.
No plucking between treatments
Wax, tweezers and epilators are out for the whole series — shaving only. For anyone used to waxing that is an adjustment, and it is worth knowing about before starting.
Cost up front
A series costs more than a pack of razors. The maths only changes when you look a few years ahead, and that is a judgement everyone has to make for themselves.
Questions that keep coming up
How long does a back treatment take?
It depends on the area and the density of the hair. Because we price by treatment time, you will know the exact number before we start.
Can you remove only some of the hair?
Yes. On the chest and stomach that is the common request — to thin the density rather than clear it completely. The number of treatments is simply smaller.
Do you have to shave beforehand?
Yes. With a trimmer any time from right away up to a few hours before, with a razor about 24 hours in advance, so the hair has time to come out. The hair needs to be inside the follicle, not above it. If you forget, you can shave at the clinic.
